Weekly Wrap-Up Week #28

Another crazy week!  We were off on Monday. 

Wednesday we had a field trip.  One of the fathers in our homeschool group participates in local Pow Wows so he came and showed us his collection of regalia and did a small performance for us.  It was really interesting!

Thursday, at the last minute I decided we should visit our local Classical Conversations Open House.  I had heard of them when I first started homeschooling but at the time I was too overwhelmed to persue any further.  Well, WOW is all I can say!  My kids fit in like they had been there the whole year.  So, we are prayerfully considering joining the group next year.  

Friday we finished up some of our lessons and then prepared for a family camp out with our Cub Scout group.  Oh my, was it ever COLD!!  And my reward is now I have a cold!

Weekly Wrap-Up - Week #27

This week has flown by and looking back I wasn't sure we got anything done.  We had 2 days off this week and in between we tried to get focused but just couldn't get our groove on.  Oh well, maybe next week!

Stephen had a great time at his Blue Gold Cub Scout Banquet.  He has worked very hard and earned his Astronomy, Basketball, and Soccer belt loops, two beads, and his gold arrow.

We also got to enjoy the great outdoors today.  That was fun!

Jonathan is headed with the youth at church to Aquire The Fire so he wasn't with us.

Weekly Wrap Up - Week #26

This week's homeschool was focused mainly on trade skills and End of Grade Testing. We remodeled our living room and we still haven't finished putting pictures and final accessories back but we are getting there!

States - Alaska....I forgot to say we started this last week.  We're going in alphabetical order.  Here's a few pictures of Stephen and Sarah coloring the Alaskan flag. 

End of grade testing all done and complete.  Now we can play around more with next year's curriculum too!

Weekly Wrap-Up #25

Let's see....hmmmm.  Main plan was to have fun for Dr. Seuss' Birthday and I think we accomplished that!

We read several Dr. Seuss books, played online games to go with them at Seussville, made our own "Cat In The Hat" Cake, and finished the week by watching the movie.

Bible - Joseph in prison and his dream interpretations.  Character trait this week is Patience.

Science - Mercury...finally made our models!

Math - Jonathan is doing perimeter and area and said this stuff is college work,lol. Stephen reviewing measurement conversions and equations. Sarah is reviewing telling time, adding double digit numbers, all the memory skip counting work, and weight measurements.

Language Arts - Jonathan is working with adjectives and diagramming sentences with them. Stephen is working on dictionary skills.  Sarah is working working with suffixes, and "c" in city, face, etc.

Spelling - Taking a break from spelling until I decide what we're going to do.

Writing - Sarah is writing simple stories from word prompts and pictures. Stephen has been working in his Cub Scout book. Jonthan is finishing up week 24 in Writing with Ease.

No basketball or cheerleading this week since the season ended so we're enjoying the Wii =).

Weekly Wrap-Up Week #24

We finished reading "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl this week. And on Thursday had a special field trip to watch the play.  So fun!  Now, my kids have the acting fever again =)

Bible - We're talking about Joseph and the trial and tribulations he went through. 

History - Ancient Egypt - We discussed the Great Pyramid and the Great Sphinx and had fun discussing mummies and heiroglyphics.

Science - Mercury...didn't get to our model making this week.  Hopefully, next week with pictures

Math - Jonathan is doing basic geometry.  Stephen is working with measurement conversions and equations.  Sarah is telling time, adding double digit numbers, and all the memory skip counting work.  She's added in weight measurements this week too.

Language Arts - Jonathan is working with adjectives.  Stephen is working on when to use teach/learn, set/sit, may/can, to/too/two.

Spelling - The boys finished up book 1 of Sequential Spelling this week so mom needs to decide what is next ASAP!  I'm thiking of switching to All About Spelling for all.  Sarah is still using her 1st grade spelling book that I bought her. 

Writing - Sarah is writing simple stories from word prompts and pictures.  Stephen has been working in his Cub Scout book.  Jonthan is finishing up week 23 in Writing with Ease.

We continued our normal scouting and sports activites as well this week.  Basketball and Cheerleading all end this week.  And we've decided not to do a thing this Spring and Summer!

Weekly Wrap-Up for Week #23

Sickness!!  Sickness!!  It's wearing me out!!  It could be so much worse, I know, but I am so ready for normal routine even as crazy as our "normal" usually is!  We did manage to get a little school work done despite the sickies this week so that was good.  I have decided not to participate in the science fair this year.  With all the sickness we've had we would be highly rushed and then the whole reason we do it (to have fun!) would be zapped from us. 

We are reading "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl this week. Next week our local Act for youth team will put on the play so we'll be taking a field trip to see that after we finish reading the book.

I have been researching and drooling over curriculum choices for next year this week too. So, I've spent way too much time on the computer! Definitely going to be adding this to our bookshelves.

To end our week we took a very special field trip!  We got to see our favorite man in action!  Hubby explained all about transporting fuel to our local stations.  It was very interesting and so nice to get out of the house finally!!  Stephen exclaimed, "that was the best field trip, EVER!".

A Typical Day At Our School

8:00 - oops, overslept again. We might as well change this to the start of our day instead of oversleeping because we're pretty routine about it =) I have my morning quiet time, get myself ready, wake the kids, enjoy my first cup of coffee, get breakfast on the table and cleaned up. It's Thursday so today's breakfast menu is cereal and fruit. Today's fruit of choice is bananas. After breakfast, the kids start their morning chores which include getting dressed, personal hygiene, fixing beds and being in school room before the timer goes off at 9:00. But for today they have one less chore because it's PJ day (decided on that last night =)! I start a load of laundry, make another cup of coffee for myself, and enter the school room ahead of the kids to welcome them. And sure to catch a quick glimpse of facebook and email =) Hubby leaves at 4:00am every morning so he's already got a good dent into his day.

9:00 - really, it's before 9:00 but we've also decided to have show~n~tell today so that begins right away =) kids then start their school jobs which are found posted on Monday's on the job chart. They have the same jobs for the whole week. This week, Jonathan is in charge of passing out everyone's folders, holds the Bible during pledge time & makes sure all lights are turned off in the house except of course for the school room. You have to be VERY specific with this crowd, I've learned. Stephen is the calendar man & holds the Christian flag for pledge time. Sarah does the weather report and holds the American flag during pledge time. After all chores & pledges are done we move to our school table and it is now 9:30.
9:30 - Bible Time. We are using the 3^rd grade curriculum for all called "Growing With God". Today's lesson is on character. We end by singing our October hymn (The Lily Of The Valley )and song (Little Sunbeams). Next, we move to either science (Apologia's Exploring Creation) or history (Mystery of History, Vol 1) and we do that together as well. Today, it's science.

10:00-12:15 or so - The kids use their folders to direct them to do what is next. Each one is filled with the day's work. For example my 11 yo, 6^th grader's (Jonathan) folders today are...

Folder 1 - Spelling which he does with his brother using Sequential Spelling.

Folder 2 - Piano practice for 20 minutes, timer

Folder 3 - Abeka Math Speed Drill, timer

Folder 4 - Abeka Language Arts, work with mom

Folder 5 - Abeka Reading

Folder 6 - Abeka Math Worksheet, work with mom

Folder 7 - Writing With Ease (Jungle Book excerpt today), work with mom

Folder 8 - Usually has a fun item..since it's almost Halloween everyone's fun item today is "cooking with Mom"..we're making cupcakes

Sarah gets to the work with mom first so she is the winner =) I work with her on all her sheets and reading and we go over any mistakes made on independent work. Stephen, now reaches his work with mom and we do the same thing. During my time working with Stephen, Jonathan reaches a work with mom but knows not to interrupt me and skips it to go to the next thing. Yeah, it worked today =)

12:30 - We're running a little behind but not too bad. I fix lunch while working with Jonathan on writing.

12:45-1:30 lunch and clean up

2:00 - music with Grandma..normally this is on Wednesday's but had to be rearranged for the week. She takes all 3 kids so I do a mad cleaning dash! Switch over a load of laundry, wash up some stray dishes, get some ham and pineapple in the crock pot for supper, fold and put away a load of clothes, sweep and mop the dining room and kitchen, grade papers from today and restock folders for tomorrow, check email

3:15 - kids are back, they spent some extra time there today playing and enjoying their Grandparents. Now, we bake our cupcakes and I write about our day =)
