Review: Captivated DVD

Captivated Movie Review

"Everywhere we go, we are surrounded by screens. Have we entered a Techno utopia or a virtual prison?", Producer and co-director, Phillip Telfer asks this and other pertinent questions in the new documentary “Captivated: Finding Freedom in a Media Captive Culture” released by Media Talk 101.

After reading this quote, I knew right away that the Captivated DVD was one that I needed to see.   We had recently dealt with a situation in our home where one of our children was sneaking their iPod to bed with them each night so they could watch TV. It didn't stop there.  Instead of doing school work, this child was also doing the same thing during school time.  When he was caught, his exact words were, "I feel like a burden has been lifted."  This allowed us to see just how addicting and strong social media, games, and TV can be. The screen time for the average American child is over 53 hours per week!
Captivated Movie Review

Captivated is an award winning documentary, 107 minutes long, in full color, and available on DVD and on demand.  It is intended for viewing by adults but approved for all ages.  You will find many people sharing their own stories similar to ours on how they found themselves sucked into all types of media.  You will hear from many family experts, media experts, church leaders, and inspiring individuals who share their thoughts on the current media age, its increase and the demand of attention that it is taking on our society.

The concept behind the film brings us back to the Bible where Colossians 2:8 says "See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception..."  It brings forth pertinent questions for each individual and family to examine for themselves.  It is shared from a biblical worldview.

The documentary is not saying that we should never have anything to do with media again but that we should use discernment as to what we are filling the majority of our time with.  You can watch the trailer to see if Captivated looks like something your family needs to see.

My thoughts and struggles...
We are definitely a media captivated family.  I spend just as much time in front of a screen (if not more) as my children do. We went for a one week media fast last year and I'm not going to lie - it was HARD.  I keep saying we need to do it again but you know what, do I really want to?  I have to hesitantly answer that question with no.  I blog, vlog, instagram, tweet, facebook, etc.  Do I even know how much time I spend on all of this?  Sadly, no I do not.  I could relate so much to the lady in the video who talked about playing Farmville.  She became sick and couldn't tend to her farm and came back to a mess.  She couldn't believe the feelings that this destroyed virtual world left her with.  That was her wake up call.  Who cares if my virtual farm has weeds and all the animals are loose.  It is not real!  Why am I letting this stuff get to me?  Does it matter?  No, it does not!

The Captivated DVD was so eye opening and convicting for me.  I had my children watching with me.  The child who is just as addicted as his mom said, "I'm not so sure about that DVD." Another child who limits their own time on video games and technology said, "that was eye opening" and didn't want to miss watching a minute of it.  Although, some of it was difficult for my youngest child (age 10), it was a great documentary for our entire family to watch.  Again, Captivated was intended for adults to view but approved for all ages.

As a Christian, my focus needs to be on God and Him alone.  I need to be in His Word and when I am He will continue to convict me to turn away from the things of this world that do no matter.  I don't think all media is bad but there is definitely a fine line of balance that you have to be intentional about or you can be completely sucked in.

During the film, Dr. Jeff Myers, president of Summit Ministries made this statement about Robert Pittman, the founder of MTV who said, "we don't just shoot for 14 year olds, we own them." That's a sickening statement for me.  The enemy is real and he's fighting for our minds and souls and for the minds and souls of our children.  These things allow him to take our focus off of what it should be on - God and God alone!  We need to armor up with His Word and His Word alone.

I am now happy to say that there will be more media fasts in our future!  I'm not saying it will be easy, but it will be done!

I think this DVD should be watched by all families!

Weekly Wrap-Ups 24 & 25

In my life this week…
Wow, what a two weeks!  We have been busy busy making memories.  :)

Update on Jonathan:  The bone is in line so hopefully after 4 weeks in a removable splint/cast he will be back to normal. Thank you, Lord!

In other news, I was SO excited to find out that I was accepted on the launch team for Dave Ramsey and Rachel Cruze's new book, Smart Money Smart Kids.  I'm up to chapter 4 now and went ahead and ordered the hardbound book.  It is truly my goal to teach my kids more about money than I was taught! My wish for them is to not be a slave to the lender EVER!

We went to the Winter Jam tour!  The talent ranged from 80's to hard rock to rap, and all were awesome! It was our 2nd time seeing Lecrae and as always, he was amazing.  I love his lyrics!!  For those not into rap or who couldn't understand what he was saying, he stopped and spoke the lyrics. His love and servant's heart for our Lord is so wonderful.

It was our first time seeing the Newsboys in concert and they blew us away!  We bought both their albums and waited around to get them signed even!

We also went to see God's Not Dead this weekend.  Another  time of awesomeness.  :)

Stephen had the opportunity to meet the Duggar family at a book signing and brought back a gift for his mama. I am a huge Duggar fan as well. :) I haven't started reading this one yet but it's on my list after Smart Kids Smart Money.

In our homeschool this week…

We are using Apologia's Astronomy book for science as part of our My Father's World Rome to Reformation curriculum. Last week was Venus and this week was Earth.  We did a little experiment using butter in comparison with rocks and what happens when they are melted.

Weigh In
One week I was the same weight and this past week I was up 1.5 pounds.  It was not a surprise at all as I have totally slacked.  A busy life tends to do that to me.  I can only focus on so much at one time no matter how hard I try!  Now is the time to refocus on healthy eating habits.

I’m cooking…

I haven't been keeping up with our meals too much so thought I would show a couple of our favorite frugal meal ideas.

One of our favorite snacks is apples mixed with jello.  We tried with sugar free and regular this time and we all agreed that the sugar free was just as good!

Oven barbecued chicken and broccoli is always a go to meal on hand in our home.  This time I paired it with a salad.

Pasta of different kinds is always another staple meal that we keep on hand.

Weekly Wrap Up - Week 15

I am so bad at wrapping up our week!!  I must get better!!  I love having a record/journal of what we have been doing.

We only have 1 more week left for this semester and then we will be taking our annual Christmas break!  Things have been going along very smoothly.  This week, we had a few minor set backs with some sickness but overall it was another good week.

In my life this week…
The good thing about sickness is we stay home more!  So, Sarah and I had fun crafting some goodies. We made these ornaments for gifts and made a video to share with you on how to make them.  They are very simple.  I found the original idea here.

Sarah also made these ballerina snowflakes.  This was a pinterest project - done!  She absolutely loved doing this.

We spent some time making small glitter bulb ornaments as well.  So, it's been a crafty week!

In our homeschool this week…
We officially finished Week 15!  Woohoo!!  Week 16 next week and then a well needed/wanted break.  :)  We also have our annual Polar Express party coming up this week.

Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…
If you are worried about homeschooling through high school - you can do it!  I listened to a wonderful expo from the Notgrass' and it was so encouraging to me.  I love being able to spend this time with my high schooler.  He is not at all crazy about school work but he does it and it is such a great lesson in life as well.  There are many things that I'm not crazy about either but they still have to be done - ie....laundry and dishes!

I’m cooking…
Christmas goodies!!  Peanut butter balls, Chocolate Mint Cookies, Sausage Balls, Rocky Road, and Chocolate Chip Cookies.

Oh my - not helping with my goal of weight loss at all.  I was down 3.4 pounds this week but part of that was the bug we had.  So far, I'm down 9.2 - so close to my first goal of 10!!

I’m grateful for…
A wonderful husband who willingly helps with the dishes and laundry - :)

A Peek Into Our School Day

As we come to the end of the Virtual Curriculum Fair, I thought it would be fun to share what a school day looks like for us.  I love looking into other homeschoolers days so I hope you will enjoy ours!

Pictures were taken through out the week with a few older ones of the games.

8:30 - School begins with prayer and MFW Bible time.

Here is our weekly bible verse - printable available at Mama Jenn.

8:45 - We go over our Classcial Conversations memory work usually by playing different games.

9:15 - We also go over whatever country/continent we are studying in geography and play MFW Geography game sometimes.

9:30 - History on Monday and Friday, Science on Wednesday and Thursday.

10:00 - We move on to independent work.  I work with Sarah first on Math, reading, grammar, and writing.  The boys have their checklists and follow those until I finish with Sarah.  I will then give her some independent work to do and work with them on anything they need help on.  My ultimate goal is for the kids do complete their work independently.

12:15 or solunch prep, eating, and clean up

1:15 or so- read aloud time - currently we are still reading Johnny Tremain.  We are s-l-o-w readers!

2:00 - finish any school work left undone including piano practice and wii fit!

Our day is typically done by 2:00 and then we do our afternoon chores.  Of course, you know that is a great day, right?  Not all days go so smoothly but we keep pressing on!

And Today I Pray For You

My sweet and precious boys.  My prayer is that you would be obedient first and foremost to the Lord your God and all else will fall into place.
They may fight with each other and get on each others nerves but truly they are best buddies.  May you each grow closer in your walk with God each and every day!

I love you!
Mom
